IT TOOK him more than a week to organize his plan. He worked his rear off, day and night, fought with Marie, slept with her and, when he didnât have anything else to do, played fun-fun with Alice in the Buick.
In some respects, he told himself, it was a tougher schedule than that of a call girl at a convention. Especially the selling part.
âYouâve been a good client,â Nicky would inform an advertiser, whether the man paid his bills on time or had the station hung up over a barrel. âAnd us folks over at WKDY want to give you a real assist. So, then, you know what weâre going to do? Well, Iâll tell you what weâre going to do. Starting tomorrow, and for the next ten days, weâre going to give you two extra spots a day and we arenât going to charge you one cent for it. How does a friendly gesture like that strike you?â
It struck them hard. The paper, everybody agreed, wouldnât pull that kind of a caper. The paper was old and rich and it charged half a buck for ten centsâ worth of space. But, then, the paper didnât have any fish frying over a hot fire, either.
âI hope you know what youâre doing,â Marie had told him when heâd discussed the plan with her. âIf you donât, we might just as well go drown ourselves.â
âAw, save that chatter. We have no choice. Weâve got to try something.â
By the end of the week the daily log at the station was as cluttered as the log of a Cunard liner. Rip Adams and Billy complained about all the extra work but the commercials rode the air, almost back to back, just the same. Alice said it was fantastic, the way things were going. And, of course, it was.
âI wish I could be positive that you havenât gone nuts,â Marie said to Nicky one night. âPlease, Nicky, tell me that you arenât nuts!â
They were in her apartment, lying upon the big bed, watching the hands on the alarm clock approach midnight.
âIâm nuts about you,â he said. He wasnât sure whether he meant it or not.
The lights were out and it was dark in the room and that pleased Nicky. He had been visiting her nearly every night and he was fully aware of every mole and scratch and birthmark on her body. He was getting a little tired of looking at the strawberry mark on her right thigh which she said got as red as fire every time she needed him. No matter when he saw it, it was always red. Lately, sheâd gone on a love kick, saying that she was in love with him. But he didnât believe her. All he had to do was look at her lush body lying on the bed and he felt like a stud on parade for blue ribbon honors.
âHell,â he said suddenly, sitting up. âI have to get out of here.â
Usually he stayed with her until one oâclock or so.
